Bio:
Julie Lebel graduated from UQAM with a bachelor degree in Dance in 1998. Her choreography was shown at in urban and rural communities across Canada: Tangente in Montréal, Pulse at the Dance Centre in Vancouver, Square Zero (I and II) in Ottawa, and Series 8:08 Season Finale in Toronto.

Her approach to art making is collaborative and multidisciplinary, involving musicians, visual artists, film makers and writers. Julie dedicates much of her practice to site specific & community based art (productions with multi-generational amateur dancers, dance flash mobs research and psycho-geography projects).

Julie Lebel’s current projects are Foolish Operations Ensemble, a group of parents dancing with their young children, Tricoter, a short form solo for Anne Cooper for unusual performing spaces presented within a knitting circle and Paper Playground, an immersive performance for the very young (0-5yrs).

Julie collaborates regularly with dance artist Miriam Colvin (Smithers, since 2004), double bassist Mark Haney (Vancouver, since 2012) and trombonist Scott Thomson (Toronto and Montréal, since 2002). Julie studies under the mentorship of Nina Martin – Texas (Ensemble Thinking, a set of improvisation tools to improve coherence, since 2003), Karen Jamieson – Vancouver (the relationship between professional and community engaged practices, since 2012), Patricia Reedy (Luna Dance Institute, CA, for her expertise in relationship based dance curriculum) and Kate Sutherland – Vancouver (group facilitation techniques, since 2014). julielebeldanceprojects.wordpress.com

Since 2012, Julie Lebel manages all Community Engaged Dance programming for Made in BC Dance on Tour. She facilitates and organizes conferences, professional development opportunities and peer-to-peer discussions and residencies. As a volunteer, Julie collaborates on development of the francophone dance milieu living in minority situations through a committee assembled by the Fédération Culturelle Canadienne Française. Also, she has contributed to CADA-West as board member from 2006-2010.

Ensemble Indépendant is a not-for-profit company based in Sept-Îles, Québec, which provides support for the production of Julie’s dance and related arts events on Côte-Nord. Foolish Operations Society will be incorporated in the fall of 2015 in BC with the mandate of producing professional and community engaged dance projects.
